Each cover is made to order from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather or Horween Chromexcel, saddle-stitched with linen thread, edges burnished and waxed. Prices start at $55 CAD. Why a Leather Cover Changes the Carry

A bare Field Notes memo book rides fine in a back pocket — until the corners curl, the cover creases, or a rainy Vancouver commute soaks the pages. A fitted leather cover adds structure without bulk. The 3–4 oz veg-tan I use holds its shape, protects the spine, and develops a patina that records where you've been. Chromexcel pulls up oils faster, darker, and handles wet coast weather better out of the gate. Both break in, not down.

Hide Selection: Veg-Tan vs. Chromexcel for Pocket Notebooks

Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned (Standard)

I pull sides from a local supplier and inspect every hide for scars, brands, and thickness consistency. For Field Notes covers I target 3–4 oz (1.2–1.6 mm). It's stiff enough to protect pages, thin enough to disappear in a jeans pocket. The flesh side gets a light gum tragacanth burnish; the grain side stays naked so it absorbs hand oils and sun. Expect a honey-to-amber shift over six months of daily carry.

Horween Chromexcel (Premium Leather +$20)

Chromexcel is hot-stuffed with oils and waxes at the tannery. It arrives softer, darker, and more water-resistant. For a notebook cover that sees rain, bike sweat, or coffee shop condensation, it's the practical choice. The pull-up effect — lightening when bent — shows up fast. Edges still get hand-burnished, not painted. If you want the cover to look "lived in" within weeks, this is the leather.

Construction Details Only a Maker Would Explain

Saddle Stitch, Not Machine Lockstitch

Two needles, one thread, each pass locking against the previous. If a thread ever breaks (rare), the stitch won't unravel. I use 0.6 mm waxed linen thread — thicker than most factory goods — in a contrasting or tone-on-tone colour you choose. Stitch holes are pricked with a French pricking iron at 3.38 mm spacing. The result is a visible, rhythmic seam that holds tension across the spine fold.

Edge Finishing: Burnished, Not Painted

No acrylic edge paint to crack or peel. I bevel, sand through 400 to 1200 grit, apply beeswax-based compound, and burnish with a canvas wheel on a bench motor. The edge seals itself and ages with the face. On Chromexcel I add a touch of neatsfoot to the compound — keeps the edge supple in winter.

Pattern Fit: Memo Book, Not "Universal"

Field Notes memo books measure 3.5 × 5.5 inches. Other pocket notebooks vary by millimetres. I cut each pattern to the exact brand you carry — Field Notes, Word., Karst, Scout Books, or a custom size you measure. The cover wraps the spine with a 2 mm gap so the book closes flat. No elastic bands, no clips — friction and leather memory hold it.

Vancouver Carry Realities

Rain rides sideways here. A veg-tan cover will darken where water hits; blot it, let it dry at room temp, and the mark fades into patina. Chromexcel shrugs it off. Bike commuters: the cover's spine edge faces your thigh — I round that corner extra so it doesn't dig. Transit riders: the cover slides in and out of a jacket breast pocket without catching on seams. I test every pattern on the 99 B-Line and a wet November ride before it ships.

From Order to Pocket

Message me with your notebook brand, leather choice, and any custom details. I'll confirm price, lead time (typically 2–3 weeks), and send a mock-up sketch. Once approved, I cut your hide, stitch, burnish, and ship — or you pick up in East Van. Every cover leaves with a care card: condition with a pea-sized dab of neutral cream once a year, or just carry it.

Will the cover fit my specific notebook brand?

Can you add a pen loop?

Yes. A 12 mm leather loop adds $5 and sits inside the front cover flap. Works with Field Notes pencil, Pilot G2, or a standard pen.

How does veg-tan hold up to daily rain?

It absorbs water, darkens, then dries. The marks blend into patina. If you hate wet spots, choose Chromexcel (+$20) — its oil content repels moisture better.

Do you ship across Canada?

Yes. Lettermail with tracking is $8; expedited parcel $18. Local pickup in East Vancouver is free.

Can I see the leather before you cut?

I can send photos of the specific hide section I'll use. For Chromexcel I show the pull-up test; for veg-tan I show the grain side under shop light.
