Custom Leather Wallets Vancouver

Every Rogue Artisan wallet is cut, stitched, and finished by Gordon Mielke in a one-person East Vancouver workshop. Classic Bifold Wallets start from $115 CAD and Long Wallets from $140 CAD. Nothing is pre-made or repeated — your spec is cut from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather or Horween Chromexcel and saddle-stitched entirely by hand.

How a Custom Leather Wallet Is Built

A wallet starts with the hide. I check full-grain vegetable-tanned shoulders for tight grain and consistent density, or pull Horween Chromexcel from the shelf if you want something with more grease and pull-up. Bifolds usually call for 4–5 oz leather for the exterior panel; interior card pockets drop to 3–4 oz so the stacked layers don't turn into a brick in your pocket.

Once the parts are cut, the edges get beveled and burnished with a wood slicker and tokoname paste. The fold on a bifold gets a crease line set with a bone folder — that pre-creases the leather so it folds cleanly instead of warping randomly over time. Long wallets get a similar crease along the spine so the flap closes flat without fighting you.

Stitching is saddle stitch, done by hand with two needles and waxed Tiger thread. Every hole is punched individually with a French-style pricking iron. Machine stitching uses a single interlocking thread that unravels if one stitch breaks; saddle stitch locks two threads independently into each hole, so a single broken thread doesn't unzip the whole seam. It takes longer. That's the point.

Classic Bifold — The Everyday Workhorse

The Classic Bifold Wallet from $115 CAD carries six to eight cards with room for folded cash. It's the build I make most often because it handles the actual daily grind — transit passes, debit cards, receipts stuffed in the back — without falling apart in six months.

Break-in takes about two weeks of daily carry. Veg-tan leather starts stiff and develops a floppier, molded-to-your-pocket feel as the fibers loosen and the leather absorbs hand oils. Chromexcel breaks in faster because of the internal greases, and it darkens at the fold lines first, giving you that pulled-up contrast look. Either material will outlast the cards inside it.

What Fits

The bifold is sized for standard Canadian bills and standard card dimensions. If you carry a Compass Card on the outside for tap-to-pay transit access, I can add a Compass Card Sleeve slot — that's a $40 CAD add-on built into the wallet body, not a separate piece dangling off the side.

Long Wallet — For Cards, Cash, and Everything Else

The Long Wallet from $140 CAD is for people who carry more than eight cards, or who prefer bills laid flat rather than folded in half. It's a popular commission for anyone who's switched to a smaller bag or crossbody and wants the wallet to live vertically inside it.

The interior layout is fully customizable. I've built long wallets with twelve card slots, a divided cash compartment, and a hidden pocket behind the billfold for a spare key or emergency bill. The exterior can be plain or tooled with the Raven maker mark — your call.

Thickness matters more here because you're stacking more layers. I drop interior pocket leather to 3 oz on long wallets to keep the finished piece from getting unwieldy. The exterior stays at 4–5 oz for structure and abrasion resistance.

Material Choices

Full-Grain Vegetable-Tanned Leather

The default for most wallets. It starts pale and stiff, darkens with use, and develops patina — the oils from your hands, the friction of your pocket, the Vancouver rain that occasionally finds its way past your jacket all contribute to how it looks over time. It's the honest material. If you want a wallet that tells a story after five years, this is it.

Horween Chromexcel

A pull-up leather from the Horween tannery in Chicago. It's loaded with greases and waxes, which makes it softer out of the gate and more water-resistant than straight veg-tan. It scratches easily but those scratches rub out with a thumb. If you want a wallet that looks broken-in from day one and handles wet weather without complaint, Chromexcel is the upgrade. Premium leather adds $20 CAD to the base price.

Sometimes I dig out something unusual — a distressed hide, an odd color, a piece with a texture that shouldn't work but does. If you select Surprise Weird Leather, I'll send you a photo of what I've got and you decide. No extra charge. This is how some of the best wallets happen — someone trusted the weird hide.

Vancouver Wallets, Built for Vancouver Pockets

A wallet built in East Vancouver gets designed around East Vancouver realities. You're tapping a Compass Card on the Skytrain in the rain, shoving the wallet back in your jeans before the water soaks through. You're bike-commuting across the Burrard Bridge with the wallet in a back jersey pocket, sweating through your jacket on the climb. You're pulling it out at a Commercial Drive coffee shop with numb fingers in February.

Full-grain leather handles all of this. It gets wet, it dries, it darkens slightly at the wet spots, and it keeps going. FAQ

Can I request a specific leather color?

Yes. Custom color adds $8 CAD to the base price. I work with what the tanneries produce — natural, tan, brown, dark brown, black, oxblood, and navy are usually available in veg-tan. Chromexcel has its own color range. If you want something specific, send a reference photo and I'll tell you what's achievable with the hides currently in stock.

What's the difference between the Rogue Collection and the Raven Edition?

Rogue Collection is the everyday carry line — the Classic Bifold, Long Wallet, and other signature pieces built to your spec. Raven Edition is for bespoke, super-custom orders with unusual construction, exotic materials, or design elements that go beyond the standard models. Most wallets are Rogue Collection. If you want something genuinely strange, ask about the Raven Edition.

Do you make the same wallet twice?

No. A shipped spec is never repeated for someone else. The dimensions, leather choice, stitch color, and pocket layout are yours. If you and another person both order a Classic Bifold in natural veg-tan with black thread, the wallets will be similar — but the spec is logged to you, and I don't copy someone else's custom layout into your order.

Can I get the wallet without the Raven maker mark?

Yes. The Raven stamp is the default finish — no charge. If you want a completely plain exterior with no embossing, that's a $10 CAD add-on because it requires a different finishing sequence to keep the panel clean. Most people take the Raven. Some prefer plain. Either is fine.

How do I start a commission?

Call or email. I'll ask what you carry, how you carry it, and what you want it to look like. From there I'll quote a price based on the model, materials, and any add-ons.
